Twin Lakes Library System to Host Family Literacy Program

The Twin Lakes Library System has received a grant from the Georgia Public Library Service to host a

family literacy program in Milledgeville. The program begins Thursday, February 2nd, and runs for 6

“The program, PRIME TIME FAMILY READING TIME®, targets children aged 6 to 10 who may be

experiencing difficulty with reading and their parents in an effort to foster a lifelong love of learning

through reading,” says Stephen Houser, Library Director.

PRIME TIME, a six week series of reading and discussion programs, includes sessions on such themes as

fairness, greed, courage, cleverness, and determination. A discussion leader and a storyteller introduce

parents to the benefits and pleasures of reading and discussing stories with their children.

The program aims to expand participants’ understanding of reading through the use of children’s

literature with substantial humanities content. It focuses on expanding the teaching of literature, history

and cultural values.

“We are very happy to receive this grant and host this program at our library,” says Stephen Houser.

“We’re also very pleased and thankful for our sponsors Chick-fil-A and Papa John’s for partnering to

provide meals for the participating families. Additionally, Milledgeville Pediatrics have donated a Kindle

Fire as a door prize to be given away at the end of the program to one participating family.”

PRIME TIME programs are sponsored in Georgia by the Georgia Humanities Council, the National

Endowment for the Humanities and the Georgia Public Library Service. The GHC is a private, statewide,

non-profit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

For more information, contact Stephen Houser at 478-452-0677.
